State rebate checks and surplus refunds

Some states return surplus revenue through one-time payments or credits. These are separate from your regular income tax refund and have their own rules and status tools.

Watch for rebate scams. States do not text you a link or charge a fee to release a rebate. Use only the official status checker linked on each program page.

Rebate or regular refund?

A regular refund returns tax you overpaid on this year’s return, and it appears in your state’s normal refund tracker. A rebate or surplus refund is set by legislation, often based on a prior year’s return, and may be paid automatically or claimed as a credit. Many rebate payments do not appear in the regular tracker, and either payment can be reduced by a debt offset.
